For this short jaunt, the first thing is to crank up 800 meters of altitude and then descend on a spectacular and difficult single trail that the Spanish conquerors created.Description:
From the parking lots at the small chapel Ermita de la Virgen del Pino above El Paso, the tour works its way up asphalt through pine forest towards Refugio El Pilar. After half of the 800-meter climb, the black ash fields of Llano del Jable can be seen on the right. You finally reach the Refugio, a popular picnic area in the forest with locals, and finally the ridge of the Cumbre Nueva, the central mountain range of the island. Here, a spectacular slope leads up and down north along the ridge and offers the best views of both halves of the island - if the clouds allow it. If not, one is grateful for sufficient waterproof and windproof clothing ... But it is guaranteed to warm the heart when the junction to the Königsweg is finally reached on the left. This roughly paved, ancient serpentine path with its slippery pine needles, rough stone slabs and tight hairpin bends demands a great deal of technical skill and attention. The goal is again the pretty chapel in the colonial-Spanish architectural style, which stands under a mighty Canarian pine. Those who have survived the difficult trail of the "Camino Real" without injuries can say their thanksgiving in front of the famous statue of Mary.
