The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig is a long-distance hiking trail over 400 kilometers long that leads from Perl on the Moselle to Boppard. Individual stages are also ideal as day tours, for example the third stage from Mettlach to Britten. The starting point of the almost twelve-kilometer tour is in the center of Mettlach. At the beginning it is worth taking a stroll through Mettlach and looking at the sights, such as the Old Abbey or the Ziegelberg Castle. Then you leave the place and cover your first meters of altitude up to the Herrgottstein. You have a wonderful view over the Saar valley and the city. You continue walking in an open area with a beautiful view of the Saar. Then the path leads you into the dense forest until you reach the idyllic Saarhölzbach valley, the scenic highlight of the tour. You walk past numerous ponds and hike deeper and deeper into the narrowing valley. The landscape is becoming wild and original. Enjoy the beautiful nature and tranquility before you finally climb out of the valley and stand in the open field. Now it is not far to your stage destination Britten. From Britten you can get back to Mettlach by public transport. To do this, take bus 224 to Merzig and get on the train around Koblenz. Unless you got a taste and follow the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig a little longer.
