March 3, 2020
This hike impresses with unique lava landscapes and takes you through one of the youngest volcanic areas on the island. The starting point is the small church Ermita de San Francisco south of the village of Montañeta. At first you hike through shady coniferous forest, but soon the rows of trees clear up - you enter the inhospitable plain, which is covered by the ash and lava of the Chinyero. The last eruption on Tenerife took place in 1909 and lasted ten days. At the Arenas Negras rest and camping site you can take a break and enjoy the view of the black mountain Montaña Negra. The lush green of the individual pines contrasts with the black stone. You hike through the nature reserve "El Chinyero" and look up to the Teide and the Pico Viejo. The rocks and volcanic cones rise abruptly to the sky, but as the valley of Santiago approaches, the valleys and hills become increasingly gentle. You have reached your destination in the relaxed village of Santiago del Teide and can finally stop off in one of the bars. After a hike, the sangria tastes twice as good. You can reach the starting point at Iglesia San Francisco from Icod de los Vinos with bus line 360. Santiago del Teide is served by lines 325, 355, 460, 461 and 462.
