Everyday life in the former GDR was flanked by repressive structures of state power on the one hand and on the other hand by opposition movements that courageously brought in their contradictions and thus brought about the Peaceful Revolution in 1989. In the Berlin districts of Lichtenberg, Mitte and Pankow, these two very different subject areas can be traced well, in some places prepared as museums, elsewhere less obviously hidden in today's cityscape. Numerous church buildings also had special significance for social change as open spaces. The "Contrasts" bike tour stops at an interesting selection of these important places! Over a distance of 20 km, it connects a total of nine locations of German contemporary history in the former eastern part of Berlin, and exciting sightseeing destinations can also be found in the vicinity of the route. The route is very well linked to public transport. The start and end point are at easily accessible S-Bahn stations.
