The "Castrum Vrenze" was already mentioned as the ancestral seat of a Frens family in 1263. This family must have died out at the beginning of the 14th century, because the castle came into the possession of the Counts of Virneburg. In 1347, Ruprecht von Virneburg sold the house to his stepson, Ritter Rutger von Raitz, whose family subsequently called Raitz von Frentz after acquiring the castle. List of monuments Bergheim 6

Remote castle - really nice, but the owners are not overly keen on visitors.
The last 100m to the castle are quite gravelly.
The access roads to Quadrath that have been open since time immemorial are now closed.
