I've passed by here many times and sometimes I stop and imagine how much effort this wall took and what went into building it.

Was it perhaps the murder of Archbishop Engelbert von Berg by Count Friedrich von Isenberg in Gevelsberg? Or were they feuds between those from Berg and those from Mark?

A rampart and ditch system, probably by Adolf VI. von Berg (1308-1343) as a border between the dominions of the Counts of Berg and those of the Mark.
This ground monument, which later also marked the border between Westphalia and the Rhineland, extended over a length of approx. 15 km
from the Ennepe valley to the Wupper.

Landwehr, Landgraben and Landhege are border marking or border security works and enclosures of settlement areas with the right to enclose or entire territories. These settlement protection systems are mostly dated to the High and Late Middle Ages and in some cases are over a hundred kilometers long. However, comparable earthworks have been mentioned since antiquity. The Roman Limes is the best-known version of an early militia. The Danewerk also belongs to this group of barriers.

These militias are still preserved in some regions - especially in forest areas - and are often protected as archaeological monuments.
