A 253-megawatt wind farm is being built 32 km offshore from Norderney. The lines to the mainland will be laid beneath the island of Norderney, hence the floating installations on the mudflats visible in the photo.

Offshore wind farms on the coast have significantly higher full-load hours, but also considerably higher maintenance costs.
Construction is also significantly more expensive than onshore wind farms.
Nevertheless, construction is worthwhile; the full-load hours are roughly twice as high, and the power output per turbine is also approximately double.
