The Shonts Grain Elevator in Heritage Park was built in 1909 by the Security Elevator Company of Winnipeg in the village of Shonts, Alberta, near Edmonton. Shonts was named after T.P. Shonts, Chief Engineer of the Panama Canal. At the time of its construction, this was the second granary in Shonts. It was equipped with a 4.25-meter-long scale with a load capacity of 2,730 kg and a hand-operated "log dump" for tipping the contents of grain cars into the pit below. This granary has a capacity of 25,000 bushels, less than a quarter of the capacity of many granaries today.
