A new Gothic church was built in the 14th century by the Archbishop of Cologne, Friedrich III. built by Saar. This was a three-aisled building with a small, built-in west tower. This church was replaced in 1875–79 by a large neo-Gothic new building with three naves based on plans by Vincenz Statz and August Carl Lange.

Haus Bürgel and Zons originally belonged together ecclesiastically and judicially. A small baptistery was not built in Zons until 1423, the main and full church remained unchanged from the church in Bürgel, which, however, was now on the other right bank of the Rhine due to the Rhine shifts at the end of the 14th century. Since visiting the church was very difficult due to the location on the right bank of the Rhine, in 1593 the baptistery was elevated to a parish church with all rights.
