The concept of a people's altar and anvil in the middle of the nave - surrounded by chairs instead of the usual rows of pews oriented towards the choir - should be modern and express community-based; but inevitably has the consequence that the lecturer and priest turn their backs on some of the mass visitors at the proclamation of the word of God (reading and gospel) as well as the celebration of the Eucharist (conversion).
Modern art is also visible in the large picture in the high choir and at the stations of the cross.

The construction of the Augustinerkirche began in 1266 on behalf of the Dominicans, who lived in Würzburg since 1227. In 1274 the church was consecrated to St. Paul.
The gothic building was completed in 1308. The monastery complex was overhauled baroque by Antonio Petrini between 1688 and 1691.

The Dominican Building in Würzburg is a former monastery that was founded in 1231 by Bishop Hermann von Lobdeburg. The Dominicans built a church and other buildings on Dominikanerplatz, which is now called the Augustinian Church. The monastery was dissolved in 1804 as part of secularization and the Augustinians settled there. The church is a testimony to the history and culture of the Dominicans in Würzburg.
