This is where the Old Rhine separates from the "Neurhein" since the Kühkopf was separated from the west bank by the Grand Duke of Darmstadt's hydraulic engineering director Claus Kröncke in 1828/1829 (so-called Rhine breakthrough). As a result, the Kühkopf became an island, encompassed by the new main stream and the loop of the old river course, which was called the Stockstadt-Erfelder Altrhein and became the Altrhein-Arm.
