These are very well-preserved ruins of a Carthusian monastery founded in 1398 (the site is run by English Heritage, so you will need to pay to enter). The monks of the Carthusian order lived solitary lives in separate cells. There are no better preserved ruins of a Carthusian monastery anywhere else in England.

Mount Grace Priory is the best-preserved Carthusian monastery in England. In the Middle Ages, monks lived hermit lives in one of Mount Grace’s 25 individual cells, each with a private garden. These days, you can explore the ruins and imagine how life would have been. There is also an Arts and Crafts manor house and gardens to see. The site is owned by English Heritage. Entry costs £9 for adults, £5.40 for children, and £23.40 for families. For more information, visit: english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/mount-grace-priory.
