This church replaced a previous Romanesque building in the 16th century and was subsequently redesigned several times. It is a hall church with a slated roof turret on the west side.
There are four-sided galleries in the hall. Above the altar is the pulpit from 1819.
On November 6, 2011, representatives of the St. Mary's Church in Stadtilm were given 15,000 euros to support the further restoration of the historic church paintings.
