Around 1100, the nobleman Gozwin donated the area of today's Baumgarten to the Benedictine monastery of Göttweig. In 1751 the Baumgarten estate passed to Franz Josef Giegl, who built today's baroque building in 1756. In 1911 the manufacturer Carl Faltis bought the castle. He had the building rebaroquely renovated and re-equipped. His daughter brought the castle into her marriage to the Minister of Education Max Hussarek von Heinlein. The current owner is Dipl. Ing. Constantin Hohenlohe.

Are there any specific landmarks or hidden gems to look out for near Schloss Baumgarten?

Beyond the castle's main attractions like the monumental sphinxes at the entrance and the Rococo facade, visitors often appreciate the quiet, less-traveled nature of the area. For those exploring the surrounding trails, the reward is often the unexpected, tranquil viewpoints over the Danube valley, away from larger tourist crowds.

Is Schloss Baumgarten easily accessible by public transport?

While the castle is a prominent landmark above Mautern an der Donau, direct public transport access specifically to the castle entrance is not widely available. Visitors typically reach Mautern or nearby Krems by public transport, and then proceed to the castle via a walk, hike, or cycle. The ascent to the castle can be demanding, so planning your route from the nearest public transport hub is advisable.

What are the seasonal considerations for visiting Schloss Baumgarten?

The best time to visit Schloss Baumgarten is generally during pleasant weather, which allows for full enjoyment of the outdoor areas and the neo-Baroque garden. Spring and autumn offer comfortable temperatures for hiking and exploring. Are there family-friendly trails or activities for children around Schloss Baumgarten?

While the castle itself is a historical site, the surrounding area offers various walking paths. The demanding access to the castle suggests that some routes might be challenging for very young children. However, families with older children who enjoy hiking can find rewarding trails. Is Schloss Baumgarten dog-friendly for walks?

Information regarding specific dog policies for the interior of Schloss Baumgarten is not readily available, as it is a private residence. However, the surrounding walking paths and hiking routes are generally accessible for dogs on a leash, allowing you and your canine companion to enjoy the natural beauty and views of the area.
