In the next ten to twelve years, the Padaster Valley near Steinach is to be partially filled in with the excavation of the Brenner base tunnel. Around 7.7 million m³ of rock material are to be deposited there.

The relatively unknown valley near Steinach is ten kilometers long. Only the foremost part of the Padaster valley should be affected. At the entrance to the valley, the terrain is raised by 78 meters and then slowly rises backwards.

In order to keep the environmental impact as low as possible, a separate tunnel is being built for transport. The 700 meter long Padaster tunnel leads directly from the Brenner base tunnel to the landfill. Conveyor belts and trucks bring the material up from inside the mountain.
