The Campidoglio square was also constructed according to a design by Michelangelo. Three big ones
buildings and a copy of an equestrian statue of Emperor Aurelius dominate the square. The original (restored) can be found in the Capitoline Museums on this square. Behind the
statue is the Senators Palace, on the left the Palazzo Nuovo and on the right the Palazzo dei
Conservatory.

On the occasion of the visit of the Spanish Emperor Charles V to Rome in 1536, the Piazza del Campidoglio, which was in very poor condition, was rebuilt several times. Pope Paul III commissioned Michelangelo to design the overall layout of the square.
The Florentine architect created an elegant podium for the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, which was erected in the center of the hill in 1537 and formed the centerpiece of the new urban design.
