As an engineer, Peter Rehder developed the plans for the Elbe-Lübeck Canal and made a special contribution to Lübeck's waterways. What was closer? than to name a bridge after him.
Even if not on the first try. The bridge was built in 1935-1936 to better connect the districts of St. Gertrud and St. Jürgen with the city center. The bridge was initially named after Horst Wessel, but immediately after the end of the Third Reich, in 1946, it was renamed in honor of the person who was really committed to positive things in Lübeck.
