The outstanding fortified church among the many in Transylvania is undoubtedly Tartlau. The inclusion on the list of World Heritage by UNESCO confirms this in an extraordinary way. It is the largest and strongest fortified castle, which is certainly due to the fact that Tartlau is the easternmost municipality in Transylvania and thus was the first exposed to the invading hordes.

A magnificent Cistercian castle. The largest fortified church in Transylvania. The German knightly order began building it around 1218. After the Mongol invasion in 1241, the castle complex was massively expanded by the Transylvanian Saxons. The living chambers built next to and on top of each other like honeycombs on the inside of the castle walls are particularly impressive. When there was danger, the villagers fled here with all their belongings. There was even a school, a workshop and a bakery.
