The Holy Spirit Church in Bern has been mentioned since 1228. Built as a hospital church, it combined church, monastery and hospital until the 18th century. The Holy Spirit Hospital was run by the brothers of the lay order of the Holy Spirit, who cared for marginalized people there. These included, for example, the poor sick, the elderly, the disabled, pilgrims, beggars, orphans and unmarried pregnant women - anyone who needed a place to sleep, eat or be cared for.

The Protestant-Reformed Church of the Holy Spirit is one of the landmarks of the city of Bern. It has its name from the Order of the Holy Spirit. In addition to services, today it is also used as a space for the Baroque Center Heiliggeistkirche Bern, exhibitions, concerts, talks and other events. Opposite the Loegegge on Spitalgasse 44, it forms one of the architectural focal points of Bahnhofplatz. Until 1865, to the west of the church was the Christoffel Tower. In 1860, the first real railway station of the city of Bern was built behind this church.
