On 23 July 1453, one of the ten largest battles in the Low Countries was fought on the fields of Semmerzake. The battle is known as the ‘Battle of Gavere.’ It was the last military encounter between the rebellious people of Ghent and their lord, the Burgundian Duke Philip the Good, and according to experts, it was also the last battle in the medieval style. The Battle of Gavere was a particularly bloody military encounter. Every citizen of Ghent had a family member who did not survive the battle.

Just in front of the town hall stands a 3-meter-tall statue of a somewhat sullen, grieving warrior. It was erected here 500 years after the Battle of Gavere, which took place on July 23, 1453, as a memorial to all the fallen citizens of Ghent. The people of Gavere soon nicknamed it "Valeir of the Market," as the statue resembled the Gavere carpenter "Valeir Stevens."

A sober war memorial was erected near the town hall in 1953: a three meter high statue of a somewhat gruff, grieving Ghent warrior. He was soon nicknamed 'Valeir van de markt', because he closely resembled a Gaverse carpenter of the same name.
