The Waldecker Schlossberg bears the remains of a castle that is one of the oldest in the Upper Palatinate. It was first mentioned in documents in 1124. In 1794, a devastating fire destroyed the castle and the town of Waldeck.

The village of Waldeck was rebuilt around the pilgrimage church of St. Johannes Nepomuk, which was built north of Schlossberg in 1731. The climb to the lovingly restored castle ruin is worth it simply because of the phenomenal view.
