It was not until 1980 that the ruins of the old Stromburg from the 11th / 12th century were found on the Pfarrköpfchen. Discovered and excavated in the 19th century.
The castle was used until the end of the 12th century and then removed down to the foundation walls in order to build the new Stromburg on the opposite castle hill.

The old Stromburg on the Pfarrköpfchen was excavated by the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments between 1984 and 1988 because the remains of the wall on the Pfarrköpfchen were believed to be from the Roman era due to the masonry technique. However, the previously unknown 3rd castle was found, which was mentioned in fief documents of Count Palatine Ruprecht I from 1353 and in the fief register of Count Palatine Rupprecht III. from 1401 as "Alte Burg zu Stromberg".
