The Delfshavense Schie is now the most important shipping connection between the Delftse Schie and the Nieuwe Maas. The Rotterdam Schie is largely filled in; the Schiedamse Schie is hardly sailed. The Delfshavense Schie also plays an important role in the drainage of the Schieland and Delfland water boards. At the Parksluizen is a pumping station of the Delfland water board.

The fairway must be sailed 'open' to get a good view of passing traffic.

The Rotterdamse Schie is a largely filled-in canal between Overschie and Rotterdam. On June 7, 1340, Rotterdam received city rights from Count William IV of Holland. One of the privileges that the city of Rotterdam received from Count Willem IV was that Schieland had to cooperate in the construction of a canal between the Schie near Overschie and Rotterdam.
