Plenty of basalt was mined here in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for building houses, walls and roads. The former castle ruins, which adorned the "Köppel" of the Hohenseelbachskopf and were said to have been inhabited by a robber baron in the 14th century, fell victim to basalt mining. Individual pieces of wall can still be recognized by the otherwise imposing blocks of basalt, which stand alone and raised in the landscape.

Ruins of a Celtic hill fort, which was expanded into a modern castle by the nobles of Seelbach around 1350. A few years later it was destroyed by the troops of Archbishop "Balduin von Trier".

Very impressive natural history up close and personal. You literally stand on the old volcano and are comprehensively informed about the geological history on the board about the formation of the basalt rock. Here you can vividly experience the history of the earth.
