A total of 138 boundary stones were placed along the Aachen Landgraben, which once marked the outer border of the Aachen Empire, of which only around twenty can still be found. The coat of arms of the city of Aachen, the eagle, was engraved on the stones - which is why they are called “eagle stones”.

Along the Aachener Landgraben, which once marked the outer border of the Aachen empire, a total of 138 landmarks were set, of which only about 20 can still be found. On the stones the coat of arms of the city Aachen, the eagle, was engraved - therefore they are called "eagle stones".

Here is one of the surviving eagle stones, i.e. a boundary stone of the so-called Aachen Empire, which was formed by the Free Imperial City of Aachen and its associated country districts from the Middle Ages to the end of the 18th century. The land ditches and the gnarled hornbeams as remnants of the fortifications are also part of this border, which still forms the border between Germany and Belgium today.
