Kiepenkerle was the name given to itinerant traders in the Low German-speaking area between Sauerland and Hamburg who belonged to the traveling people. They brought foods such as eggs, dairy products and poultry to the cities and in return supplied salt, other goods and news to the rural areas. German traders who crossed the border to the neighboring Netherlands in this form were called Kiepkerel there, also called Kiepkerl in the north. On the Lower Rhine there is the designation Kiependräger.

The name is derived from the Kiepe, a back stretcher (basket stretcher) made of wood and wicker with which the Kiepenkerle walked across the country in order to sell their goods to the local population, which were located in and on the Kiepe.
