Wilhelmstein is an artificially created island. Count Wilhelm zu Schaumburg-Lippe had the island and fortress built between 1761 and 1767. The fortress is arranged in a star shape.

The island was actually besieged in 1787 by the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel. Due to the bog, the guns of the enemy could not reach the fortress. As later Hannover and Prussia promised support, the Hessians left again.

The Wilhelmstein island fortress is unique in Europe. Built in the middle of Lake Steinhude between 1761 and 1767, it was considered impregnable at the time because the land side was surrounded by moorland. The builder, Count Wilhelm zu Schaumburg-Lippe, equipped the buildings with numerous cannons for defense, and the first German submarine was intended to complete the defenses.

The small miniature fortress in Lake Steinhude is a worthwhile excursion destination, and the crossing on the motor sailboats of the Steinhuder Personenschifffahrt (Steinhuder Passenger Shipping Company) is a key factor in this.
