In addition to the even more notorious Vernagtferner, the Gurgler Ferner in the Ötztal was also feared for its glacial lake eruptions. When the ice of the glacier reached as far as the Langtalereck, the outflow from the Langtaler Ferner to the east accumulated and the Gurgler Eissee, also known as the Gurgler Lacke, was formed with a size of up to 4 km². In the years 1717 and 1770 its emptying devastated the Gurgl Valley and the Ötztal.
