St. Stephen's Church in Bamberg stands atop St. Stephen's Hill and has been the main church of Protestant Christians in Bamberg since 1808. Originally founded in the 11th century as a Catholic collegiate church and consecrated by Pope Benedict VIII in 1020, it was largely rebuilt in the 17th century. Its tower dates back to the 13th century. It is notable as the only Protestant church north of the Alps to have been consecrated by a pope. In my opinion, it is one of Bamberg's most beautiful churches.

St. Stephen's Church in Bamberg's old town is the only now Protestant church that was consecrated by a Pope (Benedict VIII). The monastery was founded in 1007/09 by Bishop Eberhard I of Bamberg, probably on the instructions of Empress Kunigunde. The monastery was dissolved in 1803 in the course of secularization. The collegiate church dedicated to Saint Stephen became a Protestant church in 1807.
