Come and discover the past of a turbulent battle and time for yourself.

Retranchement is now mainly an agricultural community. Two seventeenth-century monuments also deserve to be mentioned: a post mill and a hall church. The ramparts and moats are well preserved and now provide a home to rare plants and animals. A walking path now runs over a large part of the ramparts. Don't forget to visit Fort Nassau with its lookout point.

The story of Janus Tamboer is very special (see highlight komoot.com/nl-nl/highlight/5565796 )

Retranchement is a village in the municipality of Sluis, between the Belgian Knokke and the Dutch Cadzand. The name comes from the French word for fortification.

The Retranchementse mill is a grist and peeling mill. The standard mill dates from 1818. Before that, there was also a mill on the same site. It was built in 1643, but was blown over. The current mill was therefore rebuilt using old parts.
In 1944 the mill had a hard time and suffered heavy war damage during Canadian bombings. Complete restoration was completed in 1982 - 1983.

The mill can be visited on Wednesdays and Saturdays during the summer months, otherwise by appointment.
