The border between Austria and Italy – according to the Treaty of St. Germain – would have run directly through the chapel. Italy would have had to bear half of the maintenance costs. Since Italy believed it had enough churches to maintain anyway, the Nassfeld Chapel was awarded entirely to Austria.
