The summit is adorned by a rocky crown which, along with a rock formation on the southern end of the ridge, has earned Helm Crag various monikers over the years. Most famous of these names is ‘the Lion and the Lamb’ due to its appearance from the east. However, the formation closer to Grasmere also assumes a similar visage when seen from the village and has earned the same nickname. ‘The Howitzer’ and ‘the Old Lady Playing the Organ’ are other titles bestowed upon the summit rocks.
Gorgeous views from the famous rock formations
Hikes to Helm Crag’s summit earn gorgeous views, which are particularly fine over to the rock fortresses of the Langdales and, in the opposite direction, to the high Fairfield and Helvellyn massifs. To the south, the village of Grasmere and its lake look positively idyllic from this lofty perch. From the summit you can continue along the same ridge to bag further Wainwrights in Gibson Knott and Calf Crag.
Due to the difficult scrambling needed to surmount the summit rocks, Helm Crag is famously the one fell which legendary guidebook writer Alfred Wainwright did not actually get to the very top of. Most people will be content to claim the summit ridge as the top. So, despite the famously tricky apex, hiking to Helm Crag is actually straightforward on mostly grassy slopes: a perfect afternoon outing with the family at any time of year. Just make sure you keep your dog on the lead around the herdwick sheep.
