Hohenthurm Castle was built in 1736 on the foundations of a brewery that had existed since the 13th century. The remnant of this former brewery is the approximately 75-meter-long vaulted brewery cellar, which still exists today, beginning in the castle courtyard and extending beneath the park to Berlinerstrasse. The simple Baroque building was remodeled by Max von Wuthenau in 1892-1893 in the style of the time into a magnificent structure decorated with numerous obelisks and turrets. Max envisioned the Dresden Castle as a model for his remodeling, having served as a Saxon chamberlain for many years.
