Beautiful vineyard at the foot of the Drachenfels. A restaurant with local specialties invites you here and you absolutely have to look at the lookout tower in the vineyard - from here there is a great view of the Rhine Valley from Remagen to Bonn.

"... In the Middle Ages, the most important stone was trachyte from the Drachenfels near Bonn. The cathedral workshop operated its own quarry here. Almost all of the rising walls and pillars were built from trachyte. Columnar basalt and tuff were used in the foundations, and tuff stone was used for the vaults. The cathedral workshop also operated its own quarry at Unkelstein near Oberwinter to extract the columnar basalt. Various stones were used for the sculptures: in addition to trachyte and tuff stone, for example, limestone from the Münsterland (Baumberger »sandstone«) and Carrara marble. ..."
