In 1544, the "Mulle Breidenhuiß" is mentioned in a document, but it is probably much older. When the grain mill operated by hydropower was no longer profitable - perhaps due to competition from the neighboring Heidberger mill and Bruchermühle - it was converted into a grinding mill, which was in operation until 1899/1900.

On January 26th, 1544 the Breidenmühle is mentioned in a legal opinion of the Haan citizens for the Archbishop of Cologne as "Mulle zu Breidenhuiß" with the note that the mill has stood there since "everybody remembers", so it is much older. [Vollmar]
"The mill was originally part of the Breidenhaus, also called Breidenhof, which is also located in Haan. This property was owned by members of a Breidt family as early as the 16th century, and the name of the mill goes back to this family name." [Brangs]
