Since the Flemish Region became the owner of the centuries-old Vijverbos, the green area in the northeast of Dentergem has been called ‘the Meikensbos’, after a reference on the Sanderus map of 1641, namely Meykenhoek. In the 19th century, these forests became fragmented. Due to the steady cutting for firewood during the two world wars and due to development for the benefit of agricultural land, the forest area shrank to a mere 5 ha. The agency for Nature and Forests bought 46 ha of land between 2000 and 2010. The domain is further developed and afforested annually. It consists of forest area, a seed orchard, pasture and fallow areas. The area is particularly interesting for many animal groups such as birds and butterflies.

On the border between Tielt and Dentergem lies a new tourist-recreational centre on and around the Poelberg. The Meikensbossen can be found at the foot of the hill and is approximately 63 hectares in size. You can walk pleasantly through a varied landscape. Old and young forest, avenues, hayfields and meadows. Here and there a pond. The view of the Poelbergmolen completes the picture. While you enjoy the landscape, songbirds treat you to a beautiful intermezzo.
