After the Magdeburg cemeteries were closed in 1827 for funerals, opened in the same year the North Cemetery as the first municipal cemetery. As a result of the population increase at the end of the 19th century, the South Cemetery was opened in 1872, but soon no longer sufficient. Therefore, in 1893 by the city council approved funds for the construction of a new cemetery in the west of the city.

The Magdeburg Westfriedhof was planned by the then gardening director Johann Gottlieb Schoch (1853-1905) with an area of about 30 ha. The planning of the buildings was done by the former city architect Otto Peters (1850-1927). After the death of Gottlieb Schoch, the further design of the Westfriedhof was continued by garden director Wilhelm Linke (1866-1942). The cemetery was officially opened on 17 October 1898. The same day, the first funeral took place around 3 pm. Since the mid-1920s, urn burials were also held at the Westfriedhof. 1929/30 was the entrance to the pavilion on the West Cemetery in the style of the New Building.

Today, the area of the Westfriedhof is about 62.5 ha. This makes it the largest cemetery in the state capital. It is home to historic tombs, fountains and monuments that are considered part of Magdeburg's art history. They were created by sculptors and artists such as Eberhard Roßdeutscher, Heinrich Maria Waderé, Rudolf Bosselt, Albin Camillo Müller, Wieland Schmiedel and Fritz Cremer.
The crematorium was first extended in 1965. In 1994, the cemetery was completely listed, in 1996 the crematorium expanded again and in 2000 the chapel was renovated.
