Southwest of Neustadt near the route Süseler-Baum –Ostseebäder one arrives via a chestnut avenue to the gatehouse of the former noble estate Oevelgönne, which is separated from Süsel by the Süseler See. Hence the name, which comes from "ant oever gün", i.e. "on the other side of the river".
Originally owned by the v. Buchwaldt, Oevelgönne came to the Pogwisch family in the middle of the 16th century. Today Christoph Haenschel is the owner. The estate, which has an eventful history, used to include several villages and farms. The main farm Oevelgönne covered 630 hectares around 1900 with 45 horses, 150 cows and 100 young cattle.
Of the entire courtyard, only the large manor and the picturesque gatehouse, inhabited by tenants, have been preserved. It was built in half-timbered in 1698 and provided with a tiled roof as well as a gabled dwelling and a turret with a curved hood over the gate passage.
The listed building is one of the oldest gatehouses in Schleswig-Holstein and is a unique rarity in its form.
