The two lower floors are dated to 1390, the 3rd and 4th floors to 1429/30. In the 16th century the tower was used as a prison. In the middle of the 19th century, an oversized picture of the local hero Romäus, a mercenary around whom numerous legends grew, was installed. The current picture was painted in 1981.

At 39 meters, the Romäusturm is the highest defensive tower in the city wall. The two lower floors were built in 1390. In 1429 the 3rd and 4th floors were added.
