This is the former post office, which closed permanently in 2011. A thorough renovation followed, giving new impetus to the revaluation of the monumental Amsterdam School building. It was built between 1917 and 1924 to a design by architect J. Crouwel. For a long time, the side and rear of the building, in particular, were inaccessible and unattractive. Now, the building has been opened up on all sides, and the new construction on the Oudegracht side has given it a new dimension. The imposing, parabolic hall of yellow glazed brick, complemented by sculptures (by H.A. van den Eijnde) inspired by Egyptian and Assyrian art, is the central part of the library. Many of the decorations and sculptures recall its original function, as it housed not only the post office but also the telegraph and telephone lines, which connected the country and abroad.
