A "slender piece of land that disappears into the sea": this is how Gaspar Frutuoso, a historian and priest from the 16th century, justifies the name "Ponta Delgada" in his work "Saudades da Terra". The origins of this municipality shaped by the sea date back to 1552.

With an area of 8.8 km², Ponta Delgada is known for the fertility of its soil. This rough but carefully cultivated land is used to produce some of the island's typical delicacies.
