Our small, lively community in the heart of East Frisia
The Evangelical Lutheran Church Community Maria Magdalena Church Welcome to the Evangelical Lutheran Maria Magdalena Church Community Hatshausen-Ayenwolde.

The church of the small community, which now has around 450 members, was built in 1783. It is the mother community of all Lutheran churches in Moormerland.
The church was built exactly in the middle of the village between Hatshausen and Ayenwolde with the bricks of its medieval predecessor church "Sunta Maria Magdalena" from Hatshausen. Sermons, prayers and blessings take place with one foot in each district! The altar and pulpit are in the middle so that the congregation can hear each other clearly during the service. After the renovation completed in 2013 with the restoration of the historic church tower, it is a real gem.

History

Hatshausen and Ayenwolde were founded in the 13th/14th century as a result of the moor colonization and in the Middle Ages formed two independent parishes that were subordinate to the Leer provostship in the Münster diocese. After the Reformation, the parishes converted to Lutheranism and merged to form a parish for economic reasons. The church in Ayenwolde fell into disrepair in 1461. The stones were used in the construction of the Zwinger in Aurich and in repair work on the Hatshausen church. The patronage of "Maria Magdalena" was taken over by the Ayenhausen church. The first joint church was built on the old site of the Hatshausen church in 1680. As early as 1783, a new building with a hipped roof and round-arched windows was built on the border line between the two places, which runs through the middle of the door, tower, altar and pulpit, according to plans by Wilhelm Nannen.
The bell tower with its Italian dome, which also serves as the entrance portal, was added to the south side in 1808.
