The "Ahrensburg Palace Ensemble Cultural Experience Area" became a bit prettier in 2014 – and more stable. For all its romanticism, the things surrounding the city's landmark must also be safe for traffic. And that's what it is now: the wooden bridge that leads from the palace island to the Bagatelle, which was renovated for €312,000.

The Aktivregion Alsterland contributed the lion's share, €140,000, and the Kulturstiftung der Sparkasse Holstein (Sparkasse Holstein Savings Bank) contributed €66,000. The palace foundation, which is in a rather less than rosy financial situation, also contributed €38,000 to the renovation. Now the small structure shines in new splendor.
The dilapidated tropical wood was replaced with larch. Only the substructure remained intact. No one could say how old the crossing from the palace island to the "mainland" was. But landscape architect Annette Kirchgeorg left no doubt that the new bridge won't last forever.
"It will probably last 20 years." With renovation costs of more than €300,000, this is a remarkably short period of time, which clearly illustrates why the more than 400-year-old castle is indeed so valuable.

A granite arch bridge leads from Lübecker Straße and a wooden bridge from the west to the island, which is lined with rows of lime trees. A moat surrounds the Ahrensburg manor house, in front of whose northern facade there are shrubs and solitary trees on the meadow. South of the island there are meadows as a rural area on both sides of the floodplain. Two lion sculptures by the sculptor Ludwig von Lücke, made in 1765, are set up on the bridge over the moat, as well as two rococo vases and a memorial stone in the park on the occasion of the abolition of serfdom in 1788.
