    A basalt cone about 641 meters high around five kilometers east of Kemnath made history. One of the oldest castles in the Upper Palatinate was located on its summit. Waldeck Castle was first mentioned in documents in 1124.

    The castle complex has been excavated and restored for several decades. The Waldeck Local History and Culture Association has contributed a large part to this. Regular services are held at the St. Ägidius open-air chapel, and theater performances are also held here every year on an open-air stage with 300 seats. Performances by the Upper Palatinate State Theater are now part of the permanent cultural program.

      The castle ruin Waldeck is the ruin of a summit castle on the approximately 641 meter high basalt cone of the Waldecker Schlossberg near Waldeck. The remains of the castle are one of the oldest ruins from the Middle Ages, information boards tell the story of the Waldeck castle ruins from its creation to its fall. The ascent itself is easy to manage at any age, it is worthwhile for an excursion destination as you have a wonderful all-round view of the surrounding area when the weather is nice. With a tour of the castle ruins you can be transported back to medieval times. Visiting the well-tended castle ruins is free of charge, but it is definitely worth a visit.

        The castle ruin is located on the Schlossberg in Waldeck and offers a magnificent view far into the country.
        The Waldecker Schlossberg bears the remains of a castle, which is one of the oldest in the Upper Palatinate. In 1124 it is first mentioned in a document (birthplace of Heilica mother of Otto Wittelsbach). It was expanded into a fortress in the 15th century and was the seat of the Landgericht Waldeck-Kemnath until 1698. In the Spanish War of Succession, the castle was taken in 1703 and destroyed, but later partially rebuilt. 1794 destroyed a devastating fire castle and place.
