The hut stands on a lookout ridge on the southern slope of Golica, just above the forest border. In 1892, the German-Austrian Mountaineering Association built a hut on this site, which was called the German Hut before the First World War. This hurt the Slovenian mountaineers a lot, so the SPD branch for the Kranjska Gora district decided to build a Slovenian hut on the top of Golica immediately after its founding in 1903. It was built in 1904 and inaugurated on June 18, 1905; it was named after Franc Kadilnik (1825-1908), the age of Slovenian mountaineers, who contributed 7,000 crowns to the construction of the hut, which was a real asset at the time. During the two wars, both huts, Germany renamed "Spodnja", were managed by the Jesenice branch of the SPD. On June 13, 1943, partisans burned both huts so as not to serve as a base for the Germans. A new mountain lodge was built on the foundations of the former Spodnja koča hut, preparations began and in 1982 construction was completed, which was completed in 1984. The ceremonial opening of the new hut took place on 3 June 1984 on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of PD Jesenice.

There is a beautiful view from the hut, and it is much wider from the nearby peak of Golica. To the east is the Karavanke ridge with the shouldered Stol and Košuta, and to the right are the peaks of the Kamnik Alps; to the southeast, the view extends across the Gorenjska plain from the Ljubljana Basin, the Notranjska hills with Snežnik and beyond; on the south side we see the slopes of Golica towards the village of Planina pod Golico and towards the valley of the Sava a divided mountain world, and on the other side Mežakla rises above the valley; to the south-west and west the Julian Alps are spreading, we can see the central part with Triglav and Škrlatica and on the northern edge the Martuljek group with Špik; to the west stretches the western part of the Karavanke ridge with Klek and Hruški vrh nearby and Kepa a little north; from the top we can see the Carinthian side: the Rož valley, the Klagenfurt basin with Klagenfurt and Lake Wörth, and to the west of it the smaller Baška and larger Osojsko lakes, and in clear weather the Low and High Tours with the Grossglockner.
