He would "declare anyone his mortal enemy" who built a museum for him,
Otto von Bismarck told a confidant in 1889, just a few months before his dismissal from his position as Chancellor and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

But as early as September 1891, a museum was opened in his Altmark birthplace of Schönhausen
    on the Elbe.

Of course, people in Friedrichsruh and the surrounding area had also wanted to profit early on from the widespread veneration of the first Chancellor among the national bourgeoisie. These efforts culminated in 1901 with the establishment of the first "museum" in the Bismarck Tower in neighboring Aumühle, whose presentation, admittedly, could hardly be called museum-worthy and consequently had to close its doors 20 years after its opening. As early as 1927, memorabilia, pictures, and paintings from the Schönhausen family estate were brought from the museum there to the "Alter Forsthof" villa in Aumühle and made accessible to the public. In April 1933, this collection was moved to the Friedrichsruh stables, where it remained until the end of the war in 1945, when the family had to use the rooms temporarily as accommodation due to the destruction of the central residential building. The collection remained in storage until, on December 4, 1950, it finally found its current home in the "Landhaus Friedrichsruh" opposite, a former inn.

Bismarck himself had purchased the building in 1871 and, after a fire in 1888, had it rebuilt the following year. Hamburg art historian Carl Schellenberg, who was involved in its construction, described the newly opened museum as a "mirror of an era" in which "not only the historically interesting and artistically successful" attracts, but rather the "remarkable charm of the little things that an important person had around him" touches. This is perhaps what makes the museum so special today. Around 350 original objects and several reproductions are on display in ten rooms and Bismarck's recreated study: historical memorabilia and personal items, depictions of significant events and people, symbols of honor and veneration, important documents, and much more.
