    Megen is a town in the municipality Oss, in the Dutch province North Brabant. It has about 1,740 inhabitants and is often referred to as a village. Megen is located on the Maas, opposite the Gelderland towns Maasbommel and Appeltern, to which it is connected by ferry services. Megen is a historic place that was a de facto independent county for a long time. It has preserved two monasteries from that time (one of the Franciscans and one of the Clares), the Prison Tower and a medieval street pattern.

      The town still has the authentic street plan with a cobblestone pavement, with old houses. Megen thus has a protected village view.
      - The Chapel of Our Lady of Seven Woes, on the road to Macharen (Megense Dijk), is a three-sided closed chapel dating from 1735 with a turned-in neck gable and a colonnaded portico. In the niche above the portico is a copy of the statue of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows made by Walter Pompe in 1736. The chapel has a (copy of) a 16th-century statue of the Virgin Mary. The originals are in the church in Megen. A benefit was attached to the chapel.

      - The Prison Gate, the only remnant of the 14th-century fortifications, consisting of a square tower with a gable roof between stepped gables, restored in 1924

        From 2000 BC. the area around the Maas has been inhabited. The Celts (no Germans) settled on the sandheads and embankments, near the fertile river clay. The Romans also spent some time in Megen and surrounding areas.
        Megen was the 'capital' of the county of Megen en, and was first mentioned as Meginum in 721. The town was situated on a spit of land surrounded on three sides by the meandering Meuse. The county itself was not mentioned for the first time until 1145, but it is believed to have existed for a longer period of time. It started as an 'allodial' (independent) county, but later became in stages a feudal serf to the 'duke of Brabant. The county also included Haren, Macharen and Teeffelen. Megen received city rights in 1357.
