"Between the grounds of the University of Duisburg-Essen and the northern city center of Essen, a new inner-city district is being built on a disused area - the so-called university district. The centerpiece is a park of around four hectares between Berliner Platz and Rheinischer Platz.
This park offers many opportunities for play, sport, recreation and culture. Lawns with seating will be laid out, children can play on playgrounds, and restaurants will invite you to linger when the weather is nice. A new residential area with services will be built around the park, which will make the previously northern district more attractive as a place to live. The rainwater that accumulates will be collected and fed into the park's 6,000 square meter water basins. The park also has a connecting function. In the north it extends to the regional cycle path of the Rheinische Bahn and in the east it connects the Bernetal with the center. The university campus will also be connected to the park, creating a fast, green connection to the city center."

The "Essen University Quarter" was developed on a former freight station site in downtown Essen that had been lying fallow for almost 30 years. The revitalization of the approximately 13-hectare site created an urban quarter for living, working and living. The park (completed in 2015) is defined by an independent design language developed from the typology and history of the location. Inspired by the history of the place, including as a residential location for Krupp foundry workers, the technical framework of iron casting technology was used to develop an identity-forming design language. A seamless, rounded shape without corners and angles can be found in all park elements, from the floor plan to the details of the furniture. The central element of the park is the slightly raised promenade with its recreational, play and sports facilities between the northern water park and the southern meadow park. The promenade defines the central public activity area at a sufficient distance from the adjacent residential buildings. A central north-south axis connects the University of Essen to the park and the city center via the central library.

The use of robust mixed perennial plantings contributes to biodiversity. The rainwater from the adjacent buildings is collected in cascade-like interconnected water basins, filtered in plant islands and retained.
