In 1902/03, Gelsenkirchener Bergwerks AG had the hall built as the technical heart of its new mine. This is exactly how the hall was designed for the first mine whose entire machine park was powered by electricity. "Zollern was a cathedral of electricity, and this was what they wanted to show off with this beauty of steel and glass."

In addition to the architectural value of the facility, the technical equipment is also worth highlighting. In the machine hall, the most important large technical devices such as conveyors, compressors and converters have been largely preserved in their original condition. Of significance in terms of the history of technology is the fact that all the essential machines, including the conveyor machines, were operated electrically for the first time at Zollern. The electricity was originally generated in the company's own generators, which are no longer there.
When designing the technical systems, great importance was also attached to representation. Obvious examples are the magnificent marble control panel with its multitude of original instruments or the large Art Nouveau clock in the machine hall. ..."
