    "... History and geographical location:
    The industrial pioneer Franz Haniel (1779-1868) made history when he pushed hard coal mining on the left bank of the Rhine from the 1850s and was finally able to carry it out successfully. The first production at the Rheinpreußen colliery took place in 1876, although the sinking of shafts 1 and 2 had been repeatedly delayed due to technical problems such as floating sand collapsing. Over the next 100 years, extensions and the construction of new shafts increased the mining area from Duisburg-Homberg to Moers (Rheinpreußen 5/9).
    An important milestone for the functionality of the colliery was the construction of the "Gerdt" shaft (Rheinpreußen 8), which was sunk in 1941 east of the main shaft as an air shaft and put into operation in 1945 for Rheinpreußen 5/9. The location in Homberg is not far from a former sawmill that was taken over in 1923 by the important pit wood company Gebrüder Cloos and is currently being repurposed. In turn, it had been merging with Franz Haniel & Cie since 1920.
    An expansion from 1955-1959 made Shaft 8 fit for cable travel and material handling. The pithead for this was planned by the architects Fritz Schupp, a well-known figure in the Ruhr area and, together with Martin Kremmer, responsible for the architecture of the Zollverein colliery, among other things. The headframe of Schacht Gerdt represents the steel framework construction and shows a reference to the brick expressionism, which shaped the industrial architecture of the Ruhr area, especially in the 1920s. The rope ride was given up again in 1967. The tower hoisting system nevertheless remained physiologically conspicuous; the chew is implemented today. ..."
